What Every Temp Should Bring with Them on Their First Day

Whether it’s a one day assignment or a rolling contract that will go on for months, you need to make a great first impression.

Every time you walk into a new office you should realise that it could turn into a potential permanent job. Never waste those opportunities by being poorly prepared. Below is a list of suggested items you bring with you on your first day:

• Your assignment sheet: Always have the name of your contact within the company and their phone number in case of emergency. If you get lost on the way or can’t find the right office, then giving them proper warning beforehand shows that you are thoughtful and prepared.

• A small notebook: You’ll be given instructions on how to run your new desk. Every phone system is different. Every booking system is different. Every company has its own way of doing things. You are a guest in that company as well as a temporary employee, do not get creative and do it your own way. Take notes so you won’t make any mistakes.

• A pen or pencil: Of course the company you’re assigned to will have their own, but this is a subtle way of showing that you are prepared for your day ahead.

• Your timesheet: Ensure that is printed and in your notebook before you arrive at your assignment. You should never have to ask for the client to print out your sheet. Have it prepared and ready for the client to review and sign it at the end of the day. And thank them once they have.

• A snack/lunch: In a new office you are not afforded the time or luxury to learn the office lay out or the food amenities nearby. You won’t find out if or where the snack machines are, so have something with you. There is nothing more embarrassing than being introduced and having your stomach grumbling at your clients.

• A positive attitude: You are providing the client with a product. And the product is you. If they see you as a miserable, sad and inept Temp then they won’t ask for you back. And your agency will notice. Remember, every day in a new company could turn into a new job. You never know who you’ll meet, and so you should always, always put your best face forward.
